WHAT IS A RESNA-CERTIFIED ATP?
A RESNA-certified ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) is a DME practitioner with extensive education and work experience who has passed the rigorous Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) exam certifying they meet the national standard of job-based knowledge of assistive technology. David Simmons has been certified for more than eight years and can provide the following for your business and clients:
- A holistic approach to assessing each patient’s specific needs and determining the appropriate equipment required to achieve that patient’s goals.
- Commitment to continuing education and training to keep pace with ever changing technology.
- Strict adherence to Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, assuring quality service and consumer protection.
WHO NEEDS THE SERVICES OF A RESNA-CERTIFIED ATP?
All DME patient suppliers who sell and/or service ultralight, tilt-in-space manual or complex rehab power wheelchairs are required by most insurance providers to employ a RESNA-certified ATP to assist in the patient evaluation, recommendation of assistive technology, and attestation.
A properly fitted and equipped chair is essential to patient/client independence, which may include the following:
- ability to perform MRADLs (Mobility Related Activities of Daily Living), such as grooming, toileting, feeding, dressing and bathing),
- potential return to work or participation in many family and social events.

- Travel to any clinic to assist therapists in the evaluation of their patients.
- Visit your home-bound patients in their residences to assess their equipment needs and potential modifications to their home environment to improve access and function.
- Work remotely via Skype for Business (HIPAA secure) with you and the team of healthcare professionals using audio/visual tools such as webcam, smartphone, tablet or computer.
